A price guide published by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) estimates that installing electricity-generating solar panels might send a message, but is unlikely to give value for money when it comes to cutting energy bills. With high installation costs and small subsequent savings resulting in a payback period of over 200 years. :o

The average PV system for a three-bedroom house costs about £15,000 and will save £100-150 a year. You do the maths.
